Compressing or reducing a digital image can mean two different things, although both go hand in hand. One use of the term refers to decreasing the dimensions of an image so that it fits better on a website, in a document or as an online profile image. The other meaning describes the decrease in the size of the image file, which helps images to load faster online. Microsoft Paint does not provide a detailed compression setting to adjust the file size in the same way, but if you reduce the dimensions of an image, crop the image, or re-save it as JPG, it also reduces the file size. Without a doubt, this technique of reducing the size of an image has become fashionable to improve the performance of a website, and today we tell you how to do it.

Steps to reduce the size of a paint image

1. Open file: search for “Paint” in the Windows 10 start screen or in the Windows 7 Start menu and load an image by clicking “File” and “Open”.

2. If you only want to cut a section of the image, choose the “Select” tool from the Home tab and drag a box on the image to select a part. Press “Crop” to cut the image to the selection.

3. Click on “Resize” to reduce the resolution of the whole image by reducing its dimensions. Choose “Pixels” if you know the exact size you want or enter a percentage. In most cases, you must leave the “Maintain aspect ratio” option activated to avoid a distorted image. Enter the horizontal or vertical size, and Paint calculates the other dimension automatically. Press OK. ”

If a website asks for an image of a specific size, but provides only a one-dimensional value, for example, “Reduce images to 1,000 pixels,” enter that value for the largest dimension.

4. Open the “File” menu, select “Save as” and select “JPEG image” to save the image without overwriting the original. JPEG images do not look as good as PNG images, but JPEG files are generally much smaller, which makes them ideal for online use.

The only time you should choose “PNG Image” when trying to compress an image is if your image consists of simple line text or text. In these cases, PNG looks remarkably better and can even provide a smaller file. PNG files are also better for temporary backups, since quality is lost every time it is saved as a JPEG.

It is essential that within the web design project the images are optimized or the image is reduced according to requirements before uploading it to the server, with this you will achieve that your site loads faster and does not affect the performance of your hosting. A good practice and within reach of all you will achieve with the paint program.

Today we will see how you can resize a lot of images at once, without having to go one by one and without using any application. You only need to visit a web page, but the photos are processed locally on your computer: it is not necessary to upload them to the Internet. It is a simple, fast and safe process.

Our cameras and mobile phones increasingly make higher quality photos, which consequently occupy more. It depends on several factors, but a 10 megapixel JPG image can occupy almost 5 MB. If you do not plan to print it and you do not need it at full size, you can resize it to save space.

Smallest pictures = less space

The compression of images is a subject that escapes the scope of this article, but as a general rule a larger image occupies more disk space. It has, after all, more pixels, and therefore more information that must be stored.

This is especially important in uncompressed image formats such as BMP, where each point is saved regardless of its content. Space saving is also important in images with compression, such as in JPG format.

At first glance you can not tell the difference, but obviously it’s when you zoom in when you notice the difference. For example, using the same images as before, we could increase the original image much more than the resized one.

Therefore, it is advisable to resize the photos you do not need large, especially those that you will not print. Another option is to keep a copy of your original quality photos, so that you still have the originals. Resized, smaller copies take up less space on your hard drive and can be more agile to manipulate in different programs.

Resize many photos at once

You could open the photos in Microsoft Paint one by one and change their size or install an application to resize photos, but there is a better way: Bulk Resize. It is a web page, but the processing is done in your browser, without being sent to the Internet. To resize your photos, first open the Bulk Resize website in your browser. It is compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge and Internet Explorer. Click Choose Images.

Now you have to select the photos you want to resize. You can select multiple photos if you hold down the Control key while clicking with the mouse. Similarly, you can select a photo with the mouse and then click on another photo while pressing the Shift key on the keyboard to select all the photos between them. When you are finished, press Open.

Now you have to choose how you want to resize the photo. You basically have five ways to do it, each one with a different tab for you to configure it. They are the following:

  1. Scale: use it to resize the photos according to a percentage. For example, if you set it to 50% it will resize the photos to half width and height.
  2. Longest side: allows you to set the maximum width or height you allow. For example, if you type 1024, the landscape photos will be 1024 pixels wide, and the photos in the portrait will be 1024 pixels high. The proportion is maintained.
  3. Width: use it to set the width of the photos. The high will be proportional.
  4. Height: same as the previous one, but to set the height of the photos. The width will be proportional.
  5. Exact Size: unlike the previous options, here you can mark the fixed width and height of the photos, without respecting the proportions. Not very recommended, as it will potentially narrow or make some photos wider.

When you have the configuration ready, click Start Resizing to start the process. Once again, remember that the process is carried out in your browser. One proof of this is that you can disconnect from the Internet and the process will run smoothly.

The process does not take too long, depending on the power of your computer. If you have just resized a photo, it is downloaded as a file. In case of many, they are downloaded together in a ZIP file.

Click on the downloaded file to open it with your favorite application to decompress files and you already have a resized version of your photos, lighter, easier to manipulate and it will take less to send over the Internet.

When you are working with several photos and all have to have a specific size, it is always tedious to have to edit them one by one to change their size. For that reason, especially when they are collections of photos of similar sizes, it is always easier to change them all in size at the same time.

Precisely for that reason today we are going to teach you how to resize several photos at the same time. There are several applications to edit images in batches, but not to complicate too much we are going to focus on a Flexi call. It is a simple application whose only mission is to precisely change the size of the images that we select.

Therefore, the first thing you have to do is enter the Sorceforge page of the application, and click on the Download button. You will download the app in .zip format, so you only have to unzip the file to use it.

In the resulting folder you have two options in the form of two different folders. The first is called install and is used to install the application. But if you do not want to run with executables, in portable you have the file of the app to be able to run it without installing it. Enter therefore in portable and click on Flexi.exe to proceed.

Resizing several photos at once

First the application will tell you to choose language. Select the one you prefer and press OK. You will then enter the application, where in the left column we can add all the photos that we want to change at the same time. Click on Add to display the options with which you can add images, which are Folder, Files or Clipboard.

The recommended thing to make things easier is that you have all the photos you want to resize at the same time in the same folder. In this way, in Add choose the Folder option, and the application will open a window in which to search for the folder you want to use. Find it, click once on it to select it and click on the OK button.

Once the folder is chosen, it will appear in the left column and you will be able to browse through all the images. In the center you will open one of the images or the one you choose, and under it you will have a few controls to see it better. In the left column, click on the folder, and then click on the change size button on the top right.

To the right of the preview of the images will open a new column with the options to change size. The first option is the one that you choose a size in itself, and gives you several to choose from, among which is to introduce yourself the exact size you want.

Below you have Resizing Mode to determine what effect the images make when resizing them. The option to choose depends on whether the images you have are of different sizes or not. The recommended in the case that all are for having been with the same camera is to choose the Adjust option.

You have two more options. The first one is Quality, and you can choose if you want to preserve the maximum quality of the image or lower it a little compared to the original. The less quality the image has, the less space it will occupy. And finally you can also adjust the proportion of the photo you have chosen. Once you have configured everything to your liking, press the Start button that you have down to the right.

And that’s it, in a few seconds the process will be completed automatically. In the same folder where that is where you have the photos the application will create a new folder called Resized, and there will be the photos you have created. For example, if your Photos folder was on the desktop, Resized will also be there.
